Indaba 2019
Hhere are some of the exciting speakers and the tentative programme, which this year includes many more parallel sessions across a wider set of topics, a research day, and hackathon track, along with the usual mentorship sessions, and Indaba celebrations.
Applications to participate in the 2019 Indaba are now open. We encourage everyone interested in machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence (and other related areas of statistical sciences and engineering) to apply, and to encourage others they know to apply as well. This year, the Indaba hopes to welcome 700 people.
The application form is simple, but is meant to serve several purposes:
- The form has 7 questions that ask you to write a short paragraph. These questions help us build a better understanding of an applicant’s interests and experience. We receive many more applications than we have space for, and thus we strive to accept the people that will benefit and add in unique ways to the Indaba.
- Applying can be difficult, and it is often unclear what type of answers to give; so we have some examples and a guide to applying online. We want to get a real sense of interests and the hopes and aspirations that people have for machine learning.
- Each of us, throughout our careers, will be regularly asked to complete forms and answer questions like these. We hope that by filling in this form, people will also use this as a process in learning to make the strongest case for themselves and of the work they do.
Anyone interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence should apply.
- Apply if you are a student, from industry, at a startup, work in policy or government, are a lecturer, postdoc, or research scientist.
- We also offer travel awards for students and academics at African institutions. These travel awards are limited in number, and therefore highly competitive.
- Most students will not need to pay any registration fees, and a fee for other types of attendees.
- The decisions about who will be accepted to attend the Indaba is separate from the decision about who gets travel funding. We also encourage everyone to search for alternative sources of funding.
Application close on the 12th April 2019.
